Honest and unafraid. That's how I would summarize Michelle Sutton's Never Without Hope.

The novel, written from the first-person perspective of Hope Williams, draws the reader into the main character's world from page one. The first half of the book focuses on Hope's affair, from its beginning to her quasi-addiction to a passion fulfilled, along with the guilt of living a double lifestyle. The second half of the book kicked the unfolding of events into high gear, where Sutton focused on the unintended consequences of human mistakes. Overall, the action occurred internally rather than externally; this book isn't so much about the act of adultery, but its ramifications on oneself and others. My favorite part was the ending, a fitting surprise. Never Without Hope is the first in a series; Sutton left room for a sequel but tied up all the loose ends as if this novel were a standalone book.

The characters were well developed. Throughout the story, Sutton proved adept at challenging the reader to empathize with Hope's predicament--body, mind and soul. In capturing Hope's secret thoughts, Sutton captured in a real way the struggle we all face at times when we indulge in unhealthy emotional strongholds. In other words, she showed both the pleasure of the moment and the ache of the aftermath.

I would identify the primary target audience as a married female. As a male reader, I felt as though I were reading a journal I shouldn't be reading--like I said, the book is honest--but discomfort I felt was due to the effectiveness of the prose. That's a good thing! Sutton portrayed Hope's struggle with both guilt and unmet needs in all its honesty. It's a portrait of how God can take our shortcomings and work them together for good.

A solid, genuine novel.

Note: There were some inaccuracies noted, so please read this first.

I never wrote a book titled "Reflections" as stated at the end of the article. That was written by another Michelle Sutton in 1996, not me. I hadn't started writing until 2003. Also the St. Michael's church mentioned was in Flint, MI, not Syracuse. Also, there is no State University of Northwest New York. It's simply State University of NY. The conference where I met Francine Rivers was in 2004, not 2005. I only have three publishers, not over half a dozen. Last, I've authored over a dozen novels, but currently seven are published, not over a dozen. The rest of my books are releasing over the next two to three years and they are all contracted. Now that we've cleared up the boo boos, here is the article. The columnist is a good writer (and a retired pastor) so it's entertaining to read. It's funny how so many times interviews are littered with small mistakes, but I didn't want people who live in Syracuse, for example, to say, "What? There is no St. Michael's in Syracuse!" I know there isn't, hence the clarification. Anyhoo... enjoy!

I know you will recognize this song because it's the song on my new book video for my current titles, but this is the entire song past the point where it cuts off on my book video. There are a few lines that make me teary-eyed because it's like God speaking into my life right now through this music video. The lines are... I worked at the ACFW bookstore the last day of conference and saw that the last copy had been sold! That was really nice because that meant no returns. I also snagged a copy of the Romantic Times July issue (the one that has the review of NWH in it) from the Romantic Times staff that attended the conference. She interviewed authors regarding Christian fiction, including me.

My Take:

This is one of those books that some people in "religious" circles will either love or hate. That's one of the things I admire so much about the author. She isn't afraid to tackle the issues that would make most author's cower in a corner sweating. I want to tell you now that this doesn't pull any punches. Hope's feelings - whether they were passion, despair, anger, love or joy - they are all covered fully and without reserve. This is not a secular novel, though. This is not erotica. It doesn't glorify bad choices or wrap it all up neatly like in a "Leave It To Beaver" episode, everyone smiling and no problems while they nibble on a plate of cookies.

What the book does is present a realistic view of what really happens and how families honestly feel and deal with situations like these. That includes the pleasant draw of sin, the difficulty in getting out of it and how very much we all need God's grace and mercy. It also deals with how those consequences can be far reaching. This book was such a breath of fresh air for providing hope, and really offering something that can be shared with those who want to know that Christians aren't perfect either - and if they aren't they can still be accepted, forgiven and loved by God right now. Some people are so afraid of judgment by others in the church that they never share their struggles. I don't think that is what God wanted the church to be like. No we don't encourage the sin, but nobody is perfect but Jesus. We all have our struggles. This was an awesome read. I hope you'll not only read it yourself, but pass it along.

In Never Without Hope, author Michelle Sutton uses first person point of view to show the thoughts and actions of a woman who feels the passion in her life slipping away. Sutton takes this story to a place very few Christian authors dare go. Her characters are all well motivated, and even though I didn't agree with some of their actions, I understood what drove them. I give this book the highest rating because Sutton pulls off a riveting, one of a kind book about a common issue in a skillful but very uncommon way.

Michelle Sutton is an incredible young writer with deep insight into problems suffered secretly by numerous wives behind their own closed doors. Written from a first person journey through a baffling experience of a satisfying intimate relationship between husband and wife to an unexplained lack of desire and no intimacy altogether. I recommend this book to adults, married or single, as a prime example of what can happen when marriage problems begin in the bedroom. Based on God's precepts for marriage,and well spoken by the author quoting the truth in scripture about marital intimacy...S-E-X...as usually referred to in secular novels explicitly and graphically, the reader follows this journey one partner is tempted beyond control and falls into willful sin outside the marriage. The domino effect of destruction to others in the lives of the characters is quick and unchallenged. Readers are taken through the confessions to the injuries of brokenness to healing as God's way is reapplied and refreshed. This story could become a means of self-identification to the reader as the denied party's story is recognized as their own real story. The story is well written with sensitivity to feelings endured by all involved. The destruction and reconstruction of a marriage is Bible based on God's Word and his Promises. An exceptional story, and an exceptional read; but keep the tissues handy.

            Michelle Sutton certainly lives up to her tagline as “the Edgy Inspirational Author” with this novel. Several times, as I read Never Without Hope, I found myself wanting to go find a fan. The thing about Michelle’s writing is that she’s not afraid to tackle the tough stuff; the subjects Christian readers want to know about, but are afraid to ask.

            In Never Without Hope, Hope and James Williams are experiencing intimacy issues. Hope feels neglected and insecure, and falls into an adulterous affair with a man she meets on a plane. This man, Tony Perotta, lives in the same small town where Hope and her family live. Things get sticky when both their spouses find out about the affair, bringing about even more complications. All along Hope is sick about what she’s been doing, yet, she can’t seem to stop. As a Christian, she is ashamed to bring her plight to God. But she needs to do some serious repentance before she loses everyone important to her.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story, but I must issue a warning to those readers who are sensitive about explicit language and adult situations. I believe that these elements are necessary to the authenticity of the story, but parents should note that this is not a book for youngsters. Still, I highly recommend Never Without Hope, and especially to women who find themselves in the same circumstances as Hope Williams.

Excerpt from Never Without Hope

Chapter 4

Once we arrived home, I wondered if James had really understood what I’d done. What I’d tried to tell him. He acted like nothing had changed. I readied for bed, wearing my short pink silk gown with the low cut neckline, his favorite. My long brown hair caressed my shoulders like silk. I draped a section over the front of my gown so it covered part of my breast.

I knew he liked my hair this way, so I gave it all I had, including the bedroom eyes. He gazed at me with sadness, and yearning. I wish I could take everything back and start over again. But some things couldn’t be undone.

“Come here.” My husband reached for me.

My skin tingled at his command, and he hadn’t even touched me yet.

I threw myself into his arms. “Oh, James. I love you so much.”

He held me tight for several minutes, then drew back until he could look into my eyes. “You’re my best friend, you know that? I thank God for you every day.”

Closing my eyes, I turned my head away. When he looked at me with such emotion, it haunted me. How could I have hurt him like that? I hated myself.

“Look at me, Hope.” He touched my chin and guided my head. “I want you to look me in the eyes.”

I lifted my lids and peered at him, wondering what he’d say next. Trembling at his touch. Pouring my heart out to him, but without words. I ached for intimacy and held my breath as I waited for his declaration of love.

“I’m not the man I once was, Hope. I can’t satisfy you anymore. I’m sorry.” His eyes filled with tears, and I felt lower than dirt.

Resting my head on his shoulder I held him tight. What did that mean? Was he telling me we’d never have sex again? I didn’t get it. With my face burrowed into his shoulder, I inhaled the scent of his musky skin, then asked, “What are you saying, James?”

“You deserve a younger man, a man with some life still in him. I just don’t feel well anymore. My drive is gone. I don’t know what’s wrong.” He sighed and turned away.

Maybe he hadn’t heard me when I’d told him what I’d done.

Maybe I was too vague, or he really didn’t get it. Now another chance to tell him presented itself. I could make sure he understood this time. I opened my mouth, but the words wouldn’t come.

His gaze slowly covered me from head to toe and back again.

“You are so beautiful.”

Tears now cascaded down my cheeks. “Don’t give up, James. See the doctor and ask him to help you find out what’s wrong.”

“No!” he yelled, making me jump. He shoved his finger in my face. “I’m not telling anyone about this. And you better not, either.”

“But how will it get fixed if you don’t—”

His face darkened. “I said no. I’m not talking about this anymore.” He stomped toward our bed and pulled back the sheets, then slid under them.

I stood with my mouth gaping. “Does this mean that we won’t ever—”

“Hope, honey, it’s not that bad.” His voice softened. “We love each other. What more do we need?” He peered up at me with a distant look in his eyes, like he’d resigned himself to a sexless marriage.

I hadn’t thought I was being selfish, but was I?

“James, there are things we can still do. Your hands work just fine. Sometimes I just like to kiss, you know? Nothing expected, just a kiss.”

He grunted. “Yeah, right, Hope. Come on. You know what you want.”

Was that so wrong? To want my husband? I didn’t get it. “Of course I want that, but I’ll take anything you give me, honey. Anything.”

“No! Not if I can’t follow through.” Frowning, he rolled over until he faced the wall, just like that.

Anger welled up in me. He’d given up too easily. It wasn’t right.

My fists clenched. I’d make him respond to me. I just needed to try harder to get him aroused. So I slid under the sheets and pressed against his back. With our son staying at his friend’s house, we wouldn’t have to worry about him barging in on us. So I kissed James’s hair, his neck, and inhaled deeply. My hand rested on his abdomen. I slid it lower. “Baby, let’s make some noise.”

He wedged himself between my arm and his torso and flung my hand off him. “Stop it, Hope. Just let me sleep.”

Let him sleep? Was this what I had to look forward to from our marriage from now on?

Fine!

I folded my hands over my chest, stormed into our guest room, and turned on the computer. I hadn’t checked my e-mail yet, so until I cooled down, at least that would distract me from wanting to use his back as a punching bag.

After deleting junk mail, I scanned my list. Tony had e-mailed me. Excited and terrified, I gave in to the urge to find out what he’d written. My blood pumped so hard it made my ears ring.

Clicking on the message, I held my breath…

I still can’t believe what happened. It was like a dream. You make me happy.

Tony

Well, at least I made someone happy. I swallowed hard as I decided what I’d say in return. After deleting several potential replies, I ended up with this…

You were great. I will never forget what happened either. I’ll dream about it tonight, for sure.

Hope

Within seconds, he responded.

We can meet again. My wife, she is gone for two days so I am home tomorrow until I must leave for work. Call me?

Tony

His wife would be gone? Wow. That meant I could see him one more time. So what if all he wanted from me was the same thing I wanted from him. It helped me cope with a miserable situation, and from what he’d already told me about his wife, Tony wasn’t getting any action at home, either.

Okay, I’ll call you tomorrow.

Hope.

Yawning, I stretched and started when my husband suddenly appeared behind me.

“Who is that e-mail from, your boyfriend?”

My face heated and I shrank from him. “Would you care if it was?”

He flinched. “Come on, Hope. I was being sarcastic. I know you’d never do that to me. Now let’s go to bed.”

“But I don’t want to sleep yet.” I gave him my most pleading look and raised the skirt of my nightie. “Touch me, James.”

“Dang it, woman! I told you how I felt! I just want you to come to bed. To sleep.”

“Then I’ll stay up.” I turned away from him.

He stormed into the other room and I heard him crack open a beer. Well, he could have his beer. I decided to watch a chick flick, since that would be the only romance I’d probably get. Too bad it had to be a fantasy, a work of fiction. I wanted the real thing, and from the looks of things, sex with my husband would never happen again.

Suddenly I felt less guilty about wanting to see Tony. If my own husband didn’t want me, then what other option did I have?

Besides, I’d only see Tony one more time. Then we’d end it. I’m sure he’d agree it was simply too risky to keep meeting, because one of these days we could get caught in the act.

I’d rather be eaten alive by sharks.

I took this pic last night (so that is why it looks a bit dark) and the book looks pretty good. It's slightly off center (you can see the edge if you look where the bed ends and there is a black line, so we're going to work to fix that.) Other than that and some stuff inside the book (oops on the header) we may be ready to print this baby in another week or so. Yay! Then I can take pre-orders. It's a gorgeous book and I am very proud of it, both inside and out.

MY REVIEW

I have read all of Michelle's published books to-date and I love her writing style. Never Without Hope is definitely her edgiest book. I thought it was fabulous. I think Michelle did an amazing job of portraying all the emotions and ramifications of an affair. She didn't shy away from telling it like it is- the good and the bad. I really appreciated the fact that the main character knew what she was doing was wrong but did it anyway- it is just so true to life.

Personally I did not find the more graphic details of the book offensive. The details were relevant and necessary to the storyline. By showing lust and sin and adultery in their true forms Michelle was also able to show just how amazing God's grace and mercy are and how you can never stray too far to receive His forgiveness.

Most inspirational novels that I read shy away from showing the true depths of sin- even in the lives of Christians- and I really respect Michelle's willingness to write TRUTH. Never Without Hope addresses a "taboo" topic in most Christian circles but one that we all know happens and therefore really needs to be addressed. I think this book has the potential to give a lot of women who are struggling in their marriages real hope.

The first small group of copies that sold had a few typos on the first page of chapter one because the publisher didn't realize he needed to "accept all changes" even though the file looked perfect, so hidden changes in the doc showed up. To swap it out for the fixed copy just archive this one, then refresh, and reload the file and voila! Perfect copy replaces the old one. :) Sorry about that. Good thing I checked, eh? I tested this myself and it worked!

Hope is bummed about this, which is why she's lying on the floor...but I'm not a mess like that. It's fixable.

The first two pages of the kindle version of Never Without Hope have a few typos (five actually) in them because the publisher didn't realize he needed to save the final changes in the doc before sending it to kindle (this same thing happened to me with It's Not About Me, but that happened in the actual print books, so it couldn't be undone! But the good news is that it will be fixed in a few days. So don't think the rest of the book is like that. Just the first two pages. I've read through the sample you can get from Amazon for your kindle application and there are no other typos after the first two pages. Sigh. At least we caught it early on. I wrote to Amazon and asked them what about people who bought the one with the boo boos and they said when a new one is submitted they send emails to people who bought it and ask if the want to swap it out for the new one. I would recommend doing that.

Now I can't wait to hold the book in my hands. Also, since we decided to make this book part of a series titled "Sacred Vows" the book cover artist designed it so the first book and series title is sitting in the rose petals that are shaped like a broken heart on the bed. It looks cool. Now if I could just get a JPG file I would show it to you. Right now I've only got the PDF file for it. Oh, and my book was reviewed by the Romantic Times. Now I'm holding my breath to see what the review says. The reviewer read it quickly, which is usually a good sign. I'm hoping the story was something she'd highly recommend. We'll see. She tends to be tough on authors with her rating system. When I find out and it's approved, I'll post it here. Peace everyone!

About plotting and pedicures...

Tomorrow night I'm going to be hanging with my cover artist and extremely cute friend Tina (pictured with me on the left), and we're going to talk fiction and about plotting Their Separate Ways, which is the sequel to Never Without Hope. And we'll do this while getting our feet beautified. Doesn't that sound like fun? Don't you wish you could join us? But you gotta find us first. :)

So far it has been fun to write. I've even drafted a third book in my head in case I decide to do one more. I just need to think of a title. We'll wait and see on that one. Meanwhile, we decided on Sacred Vows for the title of the series. It fits well, don't you think? At any rate, I'm enjoying this whole series. Now I am sure some people are going to be shocked when they read the first book, but hopefully they will move on and that will be that. This story is written for adults who have a heart for ministry and long to understand friends who are struggling in their marriages. While entertaining, the intention of the story is not to simply entertain the reader. You can buy a Harlequin romance at the store if that's what you want. But if you want to understand and minister to people struggling with intimacy issues in marriage, or if you are struggling in your marriage right now and have thought about straying because of your spouse's neglect, then this book is definitely for you.

Compare and contrasting. Narrowed down options.

Here is the deal. There are some themes and there are different effects. This top book is decided on. It WILL be the first cover for the first book. The second book deals with their lives as they leave the affair and return to their families and that is why it's titled Their Separate Ways. Now it's not a glorification of sin, but rather a look at the consequences of sin even when you repent and turn away from it. That said, these two covers below are consistent in theme for the books. The next two books are split covers to show them individually and how they are dealing with things emotionally. That's why the guy looks sad and the girl looks happy. One knows the Lord and the other does not. So the bottom two pics are the other options, however the pics for the first one (guy on top) cost five times more for the photos than the second one (guy on bottom). So this is it. It's either going to be one of the beds to go with the first book, or the split cover showing them separately. If we use the one with the people on the cover it needs to feel closest to the first book so people see that it is a series. Okay, now comments are appreciated. Even if the cover you like isn't picked, I hope you would still consider reading the novels in order, unless you are under 18. These stories contain adult situations and therefore and not appropriate for teens. I would rather not have a cover that teens would be attracted to for that reason. That's why the first cover has a bed on it. Thanks!

Here is the deal. These comments have been great because they tell me what most of you perceive. This book is NOT the first book, which is Never Without Hope. This book is the sequel. The title will stay Their Separate Ways because it's the only title with that name if you look for it on Amazon. If you remove Their then you get bunches of books on Amazon.

As far as the contrasting pictures goes, Hope is the woman and she has experienced forgiveness and renewal in her marriage to her husband after the affair, so she is joyful because she has been forgiven despite the painful betrayal in the past. He is the man she was cheating with. He does not know forgiveness and his wife is hateful and won't let him forget what he's done so he is despondent and hopeless. So their emotional portrayal has nothing to do with each other and everything to do with their marriage situations. That said, how do you feel now about the pictures... PLEASE comment as this helps a lot!

1. What made you interested in Christian fiction as something you wanted to pursue as a career as a published author?

I know that people look at me sideways when I tell them that God literally told me to write a book about evolution and to go after Harry Potter and the sexual revolution, but that's the real story, although there was no audible voice. I had no interest in writing Christian fiction when that word came down. I was living for myself at the time, and I was not prepared to make the sacrifice of time required to produce novels in my spare time. Very few well known Christian authors make enough at writing to subsist off their earnings. And I'm not known at all. So in reality I'm not really pursuing a career in writing. I'm pursuing a dispersal of God's truth through a medium that entertains as it edifies. If I can make money off of that, I'll be happy, but I'm prepared to continue to work for the Lord without financial reward.
2. What made you decide to start publishing your books and books by other authors instead of going the traditional route?

The overriding factor was that God told me to go after "Harry Potter". When agents and publishers at my first (and only) writer's conference (Mt. Hermon) indicated they liked Harry Potter, I knew I was swimming upstream. My novels contain message fiction. It is argued that message fiction is not financially viable. I was not going to let my work for God sit on the sidelines because people in a corporate office judged it to be unprofitable. As I've stated on other occasions, I'm more interested in prophets than profits. At first my intention was to publish my own books only, but I decided that other people have messages which won't be profitable that God wants delivered to the inhabitants of planet Earth, so I decided I wanted to be a midwife in helping to bring their ideological babies into the world.

3. How did you come up with a title and logo for your publishing company?

The title was a no-brainer. The mission of SOS is encompassed in Hebrews 4:12: "For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." I met a 70-year-old lady online who worked with graphics. I told her I needed a sword logo, and she came up with what I consider a beautiful graphical representation for my fledgling company.

4. Tell my readers about how you hooked up with this edgy inspirational author online.

I had just published my first novel through Outskirts Press. I knew nothing and no-one from the publishing world. A friend I met somewhere, named Tracy Ruckman, told me about Shoutlife. I signed up and got introduced to a bunch of Christian authors, including one Michelle Sutton. I don't remember how it happened, but next thing I knew, I was reading the first two chapters of Michelle's book, It's Not About Me. And then I got on as an editor at The Christian Pulse and asked Michelle if I could publish book reviews she had done on TCP. Later she recruited me to write for Christian Fiction Online Magazine. I can't help but think this was a divine connection.
5. Have any favorite authors?

Janette Oke, George McDonald, Gilbert Morris, Leon Uris, Mark Twain, Herman Wouk, Earl Stanley Gardner, Howard Fast, Trish Perry, Grace Livingstone Hill are some. Perhaps my favorite is little known Frances Hodgson Burnett. Her books included some biggies - The Little Princess, Little Lord Fauntleroy, and The Secret Garden.

6. If you had one fiction author you really admire that you wanted to publish (imagine for a moment that they approached you about a book project) who would that author be?

Hmm. Names like Angie Hunt and Trish Perry come to me. I think ultimately James Scott Bell would be my choice. I actually tried to convince him to let me re-publish a novel, which had gone out of print, that he wrote about Charles Darwin and evolution.
7. Where do you see Sword of the Spirit Publishing in the next five years?

Wow, I've never even thought about it. Most companies have long range goals and five and ten year plans etc. My goal is to publish God's word one book at a time. The existence or success of SOS is irrelevant in the big scheme of things. Perhaps God only wants me to be here as a temporary catalyst. Perhaps He wants SOS to grow and prosper. I don't have ambitions in that area. The only plan I have is to try to hear what the Holy Spirit is saying to me in regard to what to do next. I'm fine with whatever God wants.

8. Are you doing anything else on the side like book video trailers, ads, websites, covers, etc? If so, where can we find them?

I do my own book covers but I would only confess that under extreme torture. What I'm doing on the side that I like to point out are my blogtalk radio shows at http://www.blogtalkradio.com/donald-james-parker where I interview people in the Christian world, including fiction authors and my upcoming WebTV show which will be an old fashioned variety show with new twists and a Christian theme. That will be found at http://www.webtv4you.tv/channels/index.htm when it goes online - hopefully by mid April.

9. Do you have anyone who you would recommend authors who want to self-publish contact for cover design and other things?

For cover design I highly recommend Tina Stephens, the designer for the cover of Never Without Hope. For book reviews and book trailers I recommend Apex Reviews (apexreviews.net).
10. Are there any projects that you would turn down? Why or why not?

Absolutely. Success can be found easily in giving the world what it wants - the Twilights, Potter's, and DaVinci Codes. My goal is not worldly success but to serve God. If something does not honor and glorify God, I probably am not going to be interested. If it dishonors God in any way, I would not publish it no matter how good the writing. If I had a neutral manuscript about basketball or something, I might publish it, but I normally tell authors to not use me as a publisher if anyone else will publish it. I specialize in authors who have something too controversial for the traditional world.

11. What kinds of projects are your publishing company interested in pursuing/acquiring at this time?

Anything (fiction or non-fiction) that brings the unadulterated word of God to a world that has itching ears and accepts doctrine which is of demons believing that it is of God because it makes them feel good and satisfied. The world, including much of the church, does not want to hear the hard things that Jesus said. During his ministry, many followers walked away from Jesus. In modern times, they say they are walking with him but follow their own desires instead while denying the fact. I want to produce John the Baptist type literature. I'll also publish things dealing with social injustices such as spousal abuse and addictions.

Here you go! Two proofreaders commented after they zipped through the book checking for typos. The first said this as a comment... (I don't know this person so she isn't trying to flatter me).

"I feel that it hit close to home and made it easier for me to relate now to the friend going through this. I feel it helped me understand the situation better and I thank you and your book for that."

The second came from my cover artist, Tina Stephens. I dropped the book off this morning at 7 AM and she read it straight through and sent me this e-mail tonight...

"Clear the calendar and grab the Kleenex, because you won't be able to put this book down. This is the most "real" work of fiction I've ever read. Written in the style of a memoir, Never Without Hope offers insight, wisdom, and hope relevant to any stage of marriage. Whether you are suffering from the despair of an affair, or, like Hope, feel yourself above such temptation there is something to be gleaned from this novel. This is what the ARC looks like that I'm reading through. (The actual cover is the pretty black one with the bed on it and the red pillows that Tina made for me.)

Just wanted to share a few thoughts with you today. I've read my book almost straight through (I did have to get some sleep last night). There is just something about reading a book in paperback form that makes it seem new and fresh to me even though I know the story by heart because I wrote it. My emotions were all entangled in the lives with the characters again as if I'd never read this story before. That just amazes me. The realism in this story makes me feel like I'm watching a movie in my head. I hope it does the same for you.
